ACL- Anterior Cruciate Ligament, the central ligament of the knee
Articular cartilage - the slippery, cushioned covering at the ends of our bones; hyaline cartilage is composed of collagen and proteoglycans (such as glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate)
Collagen - protein found in cartilage and connective tissue
Meniscus - cartilaginous disks found in the knee
MCL - Medial Collateral Ligament
LCL - Lateral Collateral Ligament
Ligament - connective tissue structure that connects bone to bone
PCL - Posterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction- remaking a biological tissue by replacing it with a different structure. Necessary in ACL surgery due to the high failure rate of “repair” or attempted sewing of torn ACL ends
Synovium - inner lining of a joint
Tendon - connective tissue that connects muscle to bone
